How are Electricians Regulated in Fort Myers?

Are you interested in doing electric work in Lee County but do not know where to start? Well let me tell you a little bit about Lee County Electricians. Lee county does not have an Electrician license, however they offer a Certificate of Competency for Journeyman Electrician instead. This license will allow you to work as a registered Electrician under a certified contractor. Although Lee county does not have an Electrician license the person or company doing the work must be licensed and would need to have the ablility to pull permits.

What does an Electrician do?

An electrician is a tradesman specializing in electrical wiring of buildings, transmission lines, stationary machines, and related equipment. Electricians may be employed in the installation of new electrical components or the maintenance and repair of existing electrical infrastructure.

How to apply

  • Examination and Sponsorship:
    Apply for sponsorship with Lee County to test through one of the following testing companies: Prometri​c Inc., Gainesville Independent Testing Services or Prov. The sponsorship fee is $35.   • Application:
    Submit a completed Application along with all requirements to Lee County.
  • Board Hearing:
    Attend a scheduled board hearing. The Board must approve your application before a license can be issued.
  • Insurance and Fees:
    After the board approves your application, you will need to provide the required insurance documents and submit the Certificate of Competency fee of $90. Visit the State of Florida's Bureau of Compliance website for additional information.​​

    You will be issued a Certificate of Competency, which will be required to be renewed yearly on Sept. 30. ​
