Georgia Electrical Class II Non-Restricted Contractor License

The Electrical Class II Non-Restricted Contractor License allows you to do the following work:

How to Get the Electrical Class II Non-Restricted Contractor’s License in Georgia?

  1. Be at least 21 years of age
  2. Accomplish the four-year work experience requirement by choosing one of the following options:
    • Primary work experience in the installation of any of the following categories:
      • Disconnects, controls, and switches, which supply lighting fixtures, electrical circuits, appliances, controls for heating and air conditing equipment, general use equipment, and other utilization according to use and Code installation requirements
      • Determination of minimum ampacity of conductors in branch circuits, feeder and branch circuits, general lighting loads, net loads, maximum allowable conductor fill for raceway, rates or demand factors, using specified or optional methods and derating factors given in the Code
      • Cabinets, boxes, conduits, switchboards, and panelboards, which meet all Codes use and installation requirements, such as ampacity, sizing, and voltage. Conductors including taps, splices, flexible cords, cables, terminations, bonding jumpers, mastering and overcurrent protective devices
      • Properly sized equipment grounding conductors, grounding of exposed noncurrent-carrying metal parts of electrical equipment, bonding of interior metal piping system, and protection of grounding conducts from physical damage
      • Switchboards, junction boxes, pull boxes, panelboards and boxes, raceway systems, conduit bodies, and the connections in the system and to cabinets, which meet all Code use and installation requirements
      • Overcurrent protective devices, disconnect means, branch circuits, motors, and generators with feeders, and controllers all of which meet Code installation requirements, such as location, rating, sizing, and usage
      • Service risers and entrances, overcurrent protective and mastering devices, cabinets, main bonding jumpers, disconnecting means, ground electrodes, fasteners, switchboards, and ground fault protectors which all meet Code installation requirements, such as rating, weatherproofing, sizing, and clearances
      • As defined by Chapter 5 of the National Electrical Code (NEC), equipment and materials required for use in special occupancies according to use and Code installation requirements
    • At least three years of primary work experience and one year of either secondary work experience or education. Please note that secondary work experience is only valid at a rate of fifty percent, meaning that two years of previous secondary work experience will only count as one. Additionally, secondary work experience can only credit one year out of the four-year requirement
      • Credited education, including having a certificate for completion of a vocational-technical school program or a diploma in Engineering Technology
      • Secondary work experience includes any of the following work involving electrical systems covered by the National Electrical Code (NEC):
        • Instruction received on electrical installation, theory, and code by a full-time secondary or post-secondary instructor in an established class at a recognized learning center
        • Inspection of electrical wiring by a full-time municipal or county inspector
        • Installation of electrically lighted signs
        • Electrical engineering design by a registered professional engineer
        • Work for a licensed electrical contractor with sole responsibility in at least three of the following areas: estimating; project management; scheduling and assigning work; preparing progress charts (CPM's or other flow charts); sales and cash flow responsibilities such as budgetary, preparation of pay request, invoices, etc.
  3. Obtain the appropriate documents:
    • Qualified Alien Form (If applicable)
    • Secure & Verifiable Documents
    • Affidavit of Citizenship
    • Diploma in Engineering Technology or a certificate for completion of a vocational-technical school program (if applicable)
    • Submit three reference forms; at least one of those must be from a Licensed Electrical Contractor, and all of them shall include notarized signatures
  4. Fulfill and send a notarized Application for Licensure by Examination with all of the required documents and fees. The application can be mailed to:

  5. Wait for an approval letter to be sent by the Board if approved. Once received, AMP/PSI© will get in touch with the applicant to schedule the examination and provide helpful information for it. Please note that it is the applicant who must register with AMP/PSI© for the examination
  6. Take and pass the trade examination with a minimum score of 70%. If approved, AMP/PSI© will send the results both to the Board and to the applicant
  7. Access the Board’s Professional Licensing website to check the application status. Expect a response from the department regarding license issuance

The Electrical Contractors Division currently holds reciprocity with several out-of-state boards: the Alabama Electrical Contractors Board, the Louisiana State Licensing Board for Contractors, the North Carolina State Board of Examiners of Electrical Contractors, South Carolina Contractor's Licensing Board and the State of Tennessee Board for Licensing Contractors. Applicants who wish to be licensed by reciprocity and have a license from one of these Boards may do so by filling out an application. Note that the license by reciprocity is only available for the Class II Non-Restricted license. Licenses may also be obtained by reinstatement by filling out the appropriate application or renewal through the Georgia Online Licensing site.
