How to install an Irrigation System

  1. Plan the system
First, you would need to have your utility company mark out the locations where cables are buried in the yard. Calculate the entire size of the yard by using a tape measure. You would also need to measure the water pressure and verify the sprinkler's coverage. By making a diagram, mark on where you would like to place the sprinkler heads. Use flags to mark them within the yard.
  2. Access the Water line
Now to gain access the water lines, the easiest way is to use an existing spigot. An irrigation system would require the installation of an anti-siphon valve. Which would stop any brackish water, lawn chemicals and fertilizers from entering the main water supply.
  3. Dig the Trench
By using a vibratory plow, dig a trench 6” to 8” deep with sides sloping at a 45-degree angle. Place all sod to one side and soil to the other. It will make filling and patching the trench easier.
  4. Install the Value Manifold
When placing the valve manifold box dig a hole slightly bigger than the box. Attach one end of the value to main water supply line. Tighten the clamps to secure it.
  5. Run the PVC pipe
Using a ¾ “ PVC pipe, attach this to the open end of the value manifold. Lay the reset of the PVC pipes along the main trench. Use “Tee” connectors for pipes running off the main line. At each flag you marked in the yard, attach risers using a 90-degree connectors. Be sure to apply adhesive thinly and smoothly to connect each section together.
  6. Install the Sprinkler Heads
By selecting the appropriate sprinkler head based off the irrigation needs. Prior to you attaching the sprinkler heads, flush the system to clean out any debris. Now install the sprinklers heads onto the riser. Level each sprinkler heads with the soil level. Fill the trenches and holes with the dirt and sod you put aside.
  7. Install the Controller
You would need to set the timer for the length and frequency of watering. According to the manufacturer’s specifications connect the wires. Finally you are able to make the final connection to the main water service line. Fine tune all the sprinkler to make sure there is even coverage.
