How to get an Idaho Limited Installer Electrician Contractor License

The following information is how to apply for the Limited Electrical Installer License

All schooling and work experience must have been obtained per State requirements.

*YOU MUST PROVIDE A COPY OF LEGAL IDENTIFICATION (Driver’s license, Passport, Military ID

In order to qualify for the Limited Electrical Installer exam an applicant must:

• Submit notarized documentation of two (2) years (a minimum of 4,000 hrs) of work experience within the scope of the limited category. The experience must be in compliance with the rules of the state in which the experience was obtained.
• Submit a completed application (included).
• Pay the $15 (non-refundable) application fee.
• Successfully pass the examination.

Upon application approval:

Exam information will be sent to the applicant.

In order to qualify for the Outside Wireman (Lineman) Limited Electrical Installer license an applicant must:

• Submit documentation of having completed an Electrical Lineman apprenticeship program or similar program approved by the U.S. Department of Labor, Office of Apprenticeship. With this documentation no exam is required at this time.
• Submit a completed application (included).
• Pay the $15 (non-refundable) application and the $55 license fee.

In order to qualify for the Photovoltaic (Solar) Limited Electrical Installer license an applicant must:

• Submit notarized documentation of two (2) years (a minimum of 4,000 hrs) of work experience.
• Submit North American Board of Certified Energy Practitioners (NABCEP) PV Installer Certificate.
• Submit a completed application (included).
• Pay the $15 (non-refundable) application fee.
• Successfully pass the examination.

Please Note: If the applicant does not take the exam within 90 days of approval, he/she must reapply.

Idaho Limited Installer Contractor License

Any person or entity providing or offering to provide specialty electrical contracting services, including, but not limited to, submitting a bid. Must either be or employ at least one (1) full-time Idaho Specialty Electrician of the same category who has held a license for a minimum of two (2) years.

How to get an Idaho Limited Electrical Contractor License

The following information is how to apply for the Limited Electrical Contractor License

To qualify for the Limited Electrical Contractor exam as an INDIVIDUAL an applicant must:

• Be or employ an Idaho licensed Limited Electrical Installer in the same category as the Limited Electrical Contractor who has held such license for a minimum of two (2) years.
• Be the individual to be licensed.
• Submit a completed application (included)
• Pay the $15 (non-refundable) application fee.

To qualify for the Limited Electrical Contractor exam as an ENTITY an applicant must:

• Be a full-time supervisory employee of the corporation, company, etc. serving as the entity’s representative for examination purposes.
• Employ an Idaho licensed Limited Electrical Installer in the same category as the Limited Electrical Contractor who has held such license for a minimum of two (2) years, who is available during working hours to supervise all electrical work conducted.
• Submit a completed application.
• Pay the $15 (non-refundable) application fee.

Upon application approval:

Exam information will be sent to the applicant.

Upon passing the exam an applicant must: Submit proof of $300,000 Liability Insurance and Worker’s Compensation Insurance or statement of exemption for Worker’s Compensation (if applicable) and pay the $125 license fee.

How to Apply for your exam

The following infromation is for ALL HVAC realted licensing.

Once you have been approved to take an exam you will need to Schedule and Pay for the exam. An applicant has 90 days from acceptance to schedule and take the appropriate exam.

Examination Costs

The cost of your exam will be seventy-five dollars ($75). This fee is non-refundable.

Scheduling your Exam

To schedule an exam call (800) 955-3044 at least two (2) business days prior to the date you would like to test. There are limited seats available for each test and you may not receive your initial choice.

You will pay your exam fees when you call to schedule your exam and make payment using MasterCard, Visa, Discover, American Express (3% non-refundable fee if paying by credit/debit card), Check or Cash. Once payment is received at a DBS location the exam will be scheduled

Rescheduling an Exam

If you need to reschedule your exam, you may do so by contacting the Division of Building Safety. You must reschedule at least two (2) business days prior to your appointment. If you call at least two (2) days prior to your appointment, you may reschedule at no cost; otherwise you will lose your exam fees.If you fail to attend your scheduled appointment, you will forfeit your test fees and will be required to reschedule and pay the exam fee.

How to Apply for an Idaho Plumbing Appliance Specialty Journeyman

Idaho Statutes and Rules are subject to change and it is the applicant’s responsibility to ensure they have read and understand the requirements to do plumbing work in Idaho. Idaho Statutes and Rules can be found online at: https://dbs.idaho.gov/rules/current.html.

Appliance Plumbing Specialty Application

In order to qualify for the Appliance Specialty Journeyman exam an applicant must:

• Have eighteen (18) months apprentice on-the-job experience, satisfactory completion of seventy-two (72) hours of Idaho Plumbing Board-approved, related training classes and successful completion of the appliance plumbing specialty journeyman’s test.
• Be employed by a licensed contractor, under the supervision of a journeyman, be enrolled in or have completed Idaho Plumbing Board-approved related training classes and maintain state registration.
• Submit a completed application (included)
• Pay the $22.50 (non-refundable) application fee

Scope of Work Permitted. Permitted to disconnect, cap, remove, and reinstall within sixty (60) inches of original location: water heating appliance, water treating or filtering devices; air or space temperature modifying equipment which involves potable water; humidifier; temperature and pressure relief valves; condensate drains and indirect drains in one-family and two-family residences only. Does not include installation, testing, or certifying of backflow prevention devices. Does NOT include any modification to the drain, waste or vent systems. Must comply with all Idaho plumbing laws and rules and the requirements of the Uniform Plumbing Code.

How to Apply for an Idaho Water Pump Specialty Contractor License

Water Pump Specialty Application

In order to qualify for the Water Pump Specialty Journeyman exam an applicant must:

• Have eighteen (18) months apprentice on-the-job experience, satisfactory completion of twelve (12) hours of Idaho Plumbing Board-approved, related training classes and successful completion of the water pump plumbing specialty journeyman’s test.
• Be employed by a licensed contractor, under the supervision of a journeyman, be enrolled in or have completed Idaho Plumbing Board-approved related training classes and maintain state registration.

Scope of Work Permitted. Permitted to install and connect water service piping from pump to storage expansion pressure tank in one (1) and two (2) family residences only. Does not include installation, testing or certifying of backflow prevention devices. Must comply with all Idaho plumbing laws and rules and the requirements of the Uniform Plumbing Code.

Plumbing Apprentice Application
Any person who, for the purpose of learning the trade of journeyman plumber, engages in the installation, improvement, extension or alteration of plumbing systems while under the constant on-the-job supervision of a qualified journeyman plumber.

Any person who performs or supervises the actual physical work of installation, improvement, extension or alteration of plumbing systems under the direction of a plumbing contractor.

Public Works Information

The Idaho Public Works Statutes and Rules, as well as the Division of Building Safety Contractor's Business and Law Reference Manual, provide study details for Class Unlimited, AAA, AA, A, B, CC, or C. You must complete the License Examination Information form and submit it with your application if you are applying for a Class Unlimited, AAA, AA, A, B, CC, or C license. Your application will be approved after it has been accepted. The Division of Building Safety will send you an email to schedule your test. Class D research details is still included with the applications that are mailed out. The Idaho Public Works Statutes and Rules make up this section. If you're applying for a Class D license, you'll need to complete and submit the Class D test that comes with the application.

How to apply for Manufactured Housing (RETAILER OR INSTALLER) License

The following information is how to apply for the Examination as a Manufactured Housing (RETAILER OR INSTALLER)

Once you have been approved for an exam, you will have six (6) months to schedule and take the exam. You will need to contact the Division of Building Safety at least two (2) days prior to the date you would like to test. Exams are given for Retailer and Installer. Once you have been approved, you will receive a letter that gives you a breakdown of the exam you are approved to take.

The Division of Building Safety requires a passing score of at least 70% (percent) on the appropriate examination prior to issuance of an original license as a retailer or installer. The cost of the exam is $75.00. The person taking the examination must be the person who will assume responsibility on behalf of the company and will be responsible for ensuring that the company complies with all applicable statutes. Applicants must be 18 years or older.

Note that an installer installs manufactured homes or mobile homes on-site where they are to be occupied and a retailer sells or exchanges new, used, resale, or brokered manufactured or mobile homes

Additional requirements for licensure retailer:

Retailers of new manufactured homes must provide proof of being an authorized franchise dealer for the make home they intend to sell and aquire an original bond in the amount of $40,000.00.

Applicants may have to provide proof that they have a principle place of business. Make sure to provide a copy of Secretary of State filing if you have a business entity.

Additional requirements for licensure as an installer:

Applicants may have to provide proof that they have a principle place of business and aquire an original bond in the amount of $5,000.00. Make sure to provide a copy of Secretary of State filing if you have a business entity.

How to apply for Modular Building License

The following information is how to apply for the Modular Building License
