Arkansas Contractor Licenses

The Arkansas Business and Law Test is only administered by PSI©, an independent testing company, as stated on the Business and Law Instruction form.

State Licenses

Carpentry, Framing, Millwork, Cabinets - Commercial

Construction of any wood products or metal framing in a structure, including rough framing, door, window (including metal), structural and non-structural trusses, sheathing, paneling, trim, cabinets, siding, soffit, and fascia.

Class A HVACR

HVACR work without limitation to BTUH or HP capacities.

Class B HVACR

HVACR work on A/C systems that do not exceed a 15-ton cooling capacity or one million BTUH heating input per unit and refrigeration systems of 15 HP or less.

Class C HVACR

Service and repair heating, ventilation, air conditioning or refrigeration equipment. 

Class D HVCAR

“Sheet metal” work as it relates to ductwork for HVACR system, no limitation of horse power of the system to which the duct connects. 

Class E HVCAR

“Refrigeration” work as defined in Ark. Code 17-33-101 without limitation of horsepower.

Concrete- Commercial

Limited to the execution of contracts requiring skill, knowledge, ability, and experience to install, repair, maintain, and replace, concrete foundations designed to accept any structure when in the design of that structure, a footer is required.

Concrete Residential

Shall include, but not be limited to, the pouring and finishing of concrete driveways, sidewalks, patios and miscellaneous slabs.

Drywall Commercial

Drywall, incidental framing, base/finish coats

Drywall Residential

Drywall, incidental framing, base/finish coats

Floor Covering Commercial

Installation of carpet, sheet vinyl, and/or all types of wood flooring. This category does not include, tile, marble, or terrazzo.

Floor Covering Residential

Installation of carpet, sheet vinyl, and/or all types of wood flooring. This category does not include, tile, marble, or terrazzo.

Glass & Glazing Commercial

Windows, glass, prefabricated curtain walls, and storefront panels

Glass & Glazing Residential

Windows, glass, prefabricated curtain walls, and storefront panels

Industrial Maintenance Electrician

Limited by license classification to the repair, maintenance, alteration, and extension of electrical conductors and equipment for electrical power and control systems on or within industrial, manufacturing, or similar type facilities.

Insulation Commercial

insulation installation, repair, maintenance and extension to control the gain or loss of heat from all sources in buildings, rooms, pipes, vessels, ducts, process equipment, refrigerated rooms, and boxes. This includes installation, repair, maintenance, and extension of acoustical insulation.

Insulation Residential

Installation, maintenance, repair, alteration, and extension to prevent loss or gain of heat from rooms or buildings acoustical insulation.

Journeyman Electrician

Limited by license classification to install, maintain, and extend electrical conductors and equipment.

Limited Sewer

Installation, repair, replacement, alteration or maintenance of piping limited to water, sewer and storm lines from the point of utility responsibility to a point immediately inside a structure and only while in the employ of a contractor licensed for such work.

Limited Sewer Storm and Water

Installation, repair, replacement, alteration or maintenance of piping limited to water, sewer and storm lines from the point of utility responsibility to a point immediately inside a structure.

Limited Well Pumps and Piping Journeyperson

Limited to domestic water pumps and water conditioning and only while in the employ of a contractor licensed for such work.

Master Electrician

Unlimited license classification and who is authorized to plan layout, and supervise the installation, maintenance, and extension of electrical conductors and equipment.

Master Sign Electrician

Any electrical sign, limited to a max of 25Kw at 250V if self-standing

Painting Wallcovering Commercial

Application of materials common to the painting and decorating industry for protective or decorative purposes, the installation of surface coverings such as vinyl, wallpapers, and cloth fabrics.

Parking Lot Lighting Endorsement

Maintaining and repairing parking lot lights, upon successfully passing a separate examination approved by the Board of 4 Electrical Examiners of the State of Arkansas.

Remodeling Renovations

Build and remodel houses, no commercial construction

Residential Builder

Build and remodel houses, no commercial construction

Residential Journeyman Electrician

Install, alter, repair, maintain, or renovate electrical facilities for one and two-family dwellings under the general supervision of a Residential Master Electrician

Residential Master Electrician

Limited by license classification to performing electrical work for one and two-family dwellings, including planning and supervising the installation, maintenance, and extension of electrical facilities.

Residential Remodel

Remodel houses, no commercial construction

Roofing/Roof Decks - Commercial

Install and maintain all types of roofs

Roofing/Roof Decks - Residential

Install and maintain all types of roofs in residential buildings

Swimming Pool, Spa- Commercial

Build and service any pool

Swimming Pool, Spa - Residential

Build residential pools, service any pool

Wood Framing- Commercial

Framing, roofing, siding, or flooring for wood-framed structures in excess of five thousand feet used for housing livestock, storage, or processing, when such structures are not used for habitation or office facilities.

Framing, roofing, siding, or flooring for wood-framed structures in excess of five thousand feet used for housing livestock, storage, or processing, when such structures are not used for habitation or office facilities.

Applying for your License

To be licensed in Arkansas you must fill out the application which requires you to submit a list of reference questions, a criminal background check, and up to a 10,000 bond. You then will take the business and law exam along with the trade exam which is administered through PSI©.

Reciprocity

If you currently have a Contractors License in another state, you may be able to obtain a temporary license while your Arkansas Contractors application is pending. For more information please contact the Licensing Board.

Scheduling your Exam

For the fastest and most convenient examination scheduling process, PSI© recommends that you register for your examinations using the Internet. You register online by accessing PSI’s registration website at PSI©. Internet registration is available 24 hours a day.

    • Log onto PSI’s website and create an account. You will be asked to put in your email address and the spelling of your name exactly as it is shown on your identification that will be presented at the examination site.
    • You will be asked to select the examination. You will then enter your personal and contact information. You will then be ready to pay and schedule for the examination. Enter your zip code and a list of the examination sites closest to you will appear. If you prefer to test at a location outside the state of Arkansas, a drop-down menu allows you to select a different state. Once you select the desired examination site, available dates will appear.

Plumbing Candidate Bulletin

Applying for your License

In the State of Arkansas, all plumber applications must be reviewed by the Committee of Plumbing Examiners at their regular monthly meetings. Applicants will be notified by mail as to the disposition of the Committee’s decisions. Approved applicants will receive a Notification of Examination. Denied applicants will receive a letter of explanation.

Reciprocity

An application for a license equivalent to one you hold in another state or jurisdiction, must be accompanied by a completed Request for Verification of License Form or current official documentation with equivalent content. Also provide a photocopy of the out of state license. Licenses acquired by reciprocity will not be considered.

Electrical Candidate Bulletin

Applying for your License

To become a licensed electrician in the state of Arkansas you must complete an apprenticeship program, or meet the required classroom training and years worked.

All work experiences must be documented with official transcripts, notarized letters, or affidavits from past and present employers. Official letters from other licensing boards must also be present if work was performed out of state. Letters and employment verification must be dated within six months of applying. Employment verification from the Social Security Administration may be required.

Reciprocity

If you are already a licensed journeyman electrician in the following states Arkansas will recognize a reciprocity agreement:

The state of Arkansas only provides reciprocal agreements for a master electrical license from the state of Oregon.
