State Licenses

Building Commercial

Shall include the construction of building structures, including modifications thereof or additions thereto, intended for use for shelter, protection, comfort or convenience. Building construction shall include the excavation and foundations for buildings and work incidental thereto.

Building Contractor Under Four Stories

Shall include the construction of building structures, including modifications thereof, that do not exceed three stories in height, and any roof structure or component of such structure does not exceed fifty feet in height, which are intended for use for shelter, protection, comfort or convenience.

Carpentry and Framing

This scpecialty license falls under the major classification Building Construction in the sub classification of Carpentry which includes Framing and Millwork and Finish Carpentry.

Commercial Swimming Pool

Construction, repair or renovate and work incidental thereto pools.

Concrete

This scpecialty license falls under the major classification Building Construction in the sub classification of Concrete which includes Foundations, Structural concrete erection, Reinforcing Steel, and Precast/Prestressed Concrete Installation.

Concrete Pavement

This scpecialty license falls under the major classification Highways and Streets in the sub section Concrete Pavement.

Conveying

This scpecialty license falls under the major classification Building Construction in the sub classification of Special Construction which includes Pre-engineered metal buildings, Conveying, Elevators and Escalators, and Handicap Lifts.

Doors, Windows, and Glass with Specialty Hardware

This scpecialty license falls under the major classification Building Construction in the sub classification of Doors, Windows, and Glass, which includes Glass, windows, and doors, Specialty door and Hardware, and Glazed Curtain Wall.

Drainage and Culvert

This scpecialty license falls under the major classification Highways and Streets in the sub classification of Drainage and Culvert.

Drainage, Irrigation, and Flood Control

This scpecialty license falls under the major classification Heavy/ Railroad in the sub classification of Drainage, Irrigation, and Flood Control Projects and Dams.

Electrical

"Electrical Contractor" Shall include installing electrical power or control systems; maintaining, altering, or repairing electrical power or control systems, any electrical wiring devices, equipment, or any other electrical apparatus.The Master Electrical exam includes the trade and business all together in one exam.

Electrical Journeyman

"Electrical Journeyman Contractor" Shall include installing electrical wiring, apparatus, or equipment lighting, beating, or power or control covered by this chapter. He or she shall work under a master or state certified electrical contractor.

Elevator and Escalator

This scpecialty license falls under the major classification Building Construction in the sub classification of Special Construction which includes Pre-engineered metal buildings, Conveying, Elevators and Escalators, and Handicap Lifts.

Erosion Control and Mowing

This scpecialty license falls under the major classification Highways and Streets in the sub classification of Erosion control/ Mowing.

Foundations, Pilings, and Cofferdams with Retaining Walls

This scpecialty license falls under the major classification Heavy/ Railroad in the sub classification of Foundations, Piling, and Cofferdams, and also Retaining Walls.

Gas and Oil

This scpecialty license falls under the major classification Municipal and Utility in the sub classification of Gas and Oil Projects.

Hard Tile and Stone

This scpecialty license falls under the major classification Building Construction in the sub classification of Finishes which includes Painting & Wall Coverings, Special Coatings & Waterproofing,Sandblasting, Terrazzo, Hard Tile & Stone, Carpet & Resilient Tile, Lath & Plaster, Drywall & Metal Studs, and Acoustical Treatments & Insulation.

Heavy Railroad Construction

"Heavy Railroad Construction Contractor" Shall include the construction of railroads, bridges, foundations, pile driving, cofferdams, tunnels, drainage projects, irrigation projects, hydroelectric developments, transmission lines, pipe lines, marine construction and runways.

Highways and Streets

"Highways and Streets Contractor" Shall include the construction of roads, streets, guardrails, fences, parkways, parking areas, bridges, grading, drainage and all other types incidental thereto.

Homebuilders

A person who constructs a residence or structure for sale or who, for a fixed price, commission, fee, or wage, undertakes or offers to undertake the construction or superintending of the construction, or who manages, supervises, assists, or provides consultation to a homeowner regarding the construction or superintending of the construction, of any residence or structure that is not over three floors in height and that does not have more than four residential units.

Hot and Cold Asphalt Plant Mix Paving

This scpecialty license falls under the major classification Highways and Streets in the sub classification of Hot and Cold Asphalt Plant Mix Paving.

Insulation

This scpecialty license falls under the major classification Building Construction in the sub classification of Moisture Protection which includes Roofing & Sheet Metal, Sheet Metal & Metal Siding, Metal building erection, Insulation, Exterior Insulation & Finish Systems, Sprayed on Fire Proofing, and Joint Sealers.

Journeyman Gas Fitter

"Journeyman Gas Fitter Contractor" is every person who engages in or works at the actual installation, repair, or replacement of gas work, who has successfully fulfilled the examination requirements of the board, has been issued a journeyman gas fitter certificate by the board, and possesses a valid and current annual certificate issued by the board. The journeyman gas fitter shall have in his or her possession a cement annual certificate.

Journeyman Plumber

"Journeyman Plumber Contractor" is any person who engages in or works at the actual installation, repair, or replacement of plumbing systems, who has successfully fulfilled the examination requirements of the board, has been issued a journeyman plumber certificate by the board, and possesses a valid and current annual certificate issued by the board.

Lath and Plaster

This scpecialty license falls under the major classification Building Construction in the sub classification of Finishes which includes Painting & Wall Coverings, Special Coatings & Waterproofing,Sandblasting, Terrazzo, Hard Tile & Stone, Carpet & Resilient Tile, Lath & Plaster, Drywall & Metal Studs, and Acoustical Treatments & Insulation.

Marine

This scpecialty license falls under the major classification Heavy/ Railroad in the sub classification of Marine Construction.

Masonry

This scpecialty license falls under the major classification Building Construction in the sub classification of Masonry which includes Restoration.

Master Gas Fitter

"Master Gas Fitter Contractor" Shall include installation, repair of pipes, fixtures, fittings, appliances, or apparatus necessary for supplying natural gas for residential or commercial use from the point of delivery and all gas piping before connection to the combustion zone and including the applicable venting of flue gases to the outside atmosphere and the provisions for air for combustion and ventilation, including all gas fitting work.

Master Plumber

Master Plumber Contractor" Shall include installation, repair, or replacement of pipes, fixtures, or other apparatus necessary either for supplying water or for removing liquid or waterborne waste located on private property. The term is also used to denote installed fixtures, backflow prevention devices, drainage, vents, and water distribution systems located on private property, and all plumbing work.

Metal Building Erection

This scpecialty license falls under the major classification Building Construction in the sub classification of Moisture Protection which includes Roofing & Sheet Metal, Sheet Metal & Metal Siding, Metal building erection, Insulation, Exterior Insulation & Finish Systems, Sprayed on Fireproofing, and Joint Sealers.

Metal Stud and Drywall

This scpecialty license falls under the major classification Building Construction in the sub classification of Finishes which includes Painting & Wall Coverings, Special Coatings & Waterproofing,Sandblasting, Terrazzo, Hard Tile & Stone, Carpet & Resilient Tile, Lath & Plaster, Drywall & Metal Studs, and Acoustical Treatments & Insulation.

Millwork and Finish Carpentry

This scpecialty license falls under the major classification Building Construction in the sub classification of Carpentry which includes framing, Millwork and Finish Carpentry.

Municipal and Utility

"Municipal and Utility Contractor" Shall include clearing, grubbing, grading, paving, curbs, gutters, walks, alleys, driveways, sewer projects, water projects, gas projects, electric projects, telephone projects, and work incidental thereto.

Oil and Gas Fields

This scpecialty license falls under the major classification Heavy/ Railroad in the sub classification of Oil and Gas Field Projects.

Painting and Wall Covering

This scpecialty license falls under the major classification Building Construction in the sub classification of Finishes which includes Painting & Wall Coverings, Special Coatings & Waterproofing,Sandblasting, Terrazzo, Hard Tile & Stone, Carpet & Resilient Tile, Lath & Plaster, Drywall & Metal Studs, and Acoustical Treatments & Insulation.

Pipelines

This scpecialty license falls under the major classification Municipal and Utility in the sub classification of Pipelines.

Precast and Prestressed Concrete

This scpecialty license falls under the major classification Building Construction in the sub classification of Concrete which includes Foundations, Structural concrete erection, Reinforcing Steel, and Precast/Prestressed Concrete Installation.

Power Projects and Plants

This scpecialty license falls under the major classification Municipal and Utility in the sub classification of Power Projects and Plants.

Remodeling, Alteration, and Maintenance

This scpecialty license falls under the major classification Building Construction in the sub classification of Other which includes Building Maintenance Repair, and Remodeling & Alteration.

Roofing and Sheet Metal

This scpecialty license falls under the major classification Building Construction in the sub classification of Moisture Protection which includes Roofing & Sheet Metal, Sheet Metal & Metal Siding, Metal building erection, Insulation, Exterior Insulation & Finish Systems, Sprayed on Fireproofing, and Joint Sealers.

Runway

This scpecialty license falls under the major classification Heavy/ Railroad in the sub classification of Runways.

Sewer Projects

This scpecialty license falls under the major classification Municipal and Utility in the sub classification of Sewer Projects.

Sitework

This scpecialty license falls under the major classification Building Construction in the sub classification of Sitework which includes Earthwork, and Fencing.

Special Coatings and Waterproofing

Structural and Miscellaneous Steel

This scpecialty license falls under the major classification Building Construction in the sub classification of Metal which includes Structural & Miscellaneous Steel Erection, Ornamental & Miscellaneous Metal, and Metal Studs.

Telecommunications

Construction, repair or improvement of real property used as, or intended to be used for, residential occupancy or work incidental to the construction or repair.

Tunnel

This scpecialty license falls under the major classification Heavy/ Railroad in the sub classification of Tunnels.

Water Projects

This scpecialty license falls under the major classification Municipal and Utility in the sub classification of Water Projects.

How to Apply and Applications

You must first submit an application to the board where they will decide what classification pertains to your work and then you will be told the exams to take. The link to this information can be found here.

The Prime Contractor Application can be found here. Any Contractor performing work totaling in less than 50,000.00 dollars may submit a Subcontractor application. All applications have to be on file 30 days prior to a Board meeting which are held quarterly. All prime contractors must take a Business and Law Exam administered by PSI©

Reciprocity

They have reciprocity with Mississippi, Tennessee, Arkansas and Louisiana. You have to be licensed for 3 years consecutively with the same classification you are wanting in Alabama and submit an Out of State License Verification Form. Send that to the Board with a current copy of your license in that state. Please only send the states listed.

PSI© testing

Any application received January 22, 2008 forward will be required to take a Trade exam as well as the Business and Law.

How to Apply For Master and Journeyman Electrician

Applications are to be submitted to the Board Office. Then you will be notified within 10 days after being approved and at that time you will submit an exam fee. Once this fee is paid, you will receive an authorization letter with instructions to schedule the examination. All scores are reported by mail. If you do not pass, you will receive a form to retake the examination. Do not submit your application in a quarter that you will not be prepared to take the examination. You will be required to submit a re-take Mater Electrician form or Journeyman form along with an additional examination fee if you fail to take your examination within the authorized 90 days. If you fail the exam you can submit a re-take and a new 90 days will be authorized. The Master Electrician Application can be found here The Journeyman Application can be found here.

Reciprocity

They have reciprocity with Mississippi, Tennessee, Arkansas and Louisiana. You must submit an Electrical Contractor License Application by Reciprocity and Request for Verification of License.

Limited or Unlimited Homebuilders License

You must submit either an Unlimited license application or a Limited license application. To decide which license fits your need you must see three things. If the cost of the undertaking is less than 10,000 dollars you do not need any license. If it is over that amount then you will need one of the two. If the work involves more than one trade or affects the structural integrity than you will need unlimited if not then you will be fine with a limited license. You can see a visual explanation here.

Reciprocity

They have reciprocity with Mississippi, Tennessee, Arkansas and Louisiana. You must submit a Request for Verification of License.

Plumbers and Gasfitters License

You must submit either an Apprentice Registration before applying to any license. Please see these requirements and fees for more information. You can complete this form if you wish to request for the Board to consider taking Journeyman exam prior to completion of the prescribed 2-year apprenticeship. Once you meet the requirments submit an application.

Reciprocity

They have reciprocity with Mississippi, Tennessee, Arkansas and Louisiana. You must submit a Request for Verification of License.

PSI© testing

Effective September 1, 2015, when you pass an examination, you have ninety (90) calendar days to obtain your certification from the date you pass your examination. If you do not obtain your certification within ninety (90) calendar days of the date you pass your examination, you will have to re-test.
