City of Gainesville Permits

Permits

The City of Gainesville requires the folowing permit application. For every permit below that is submitted, you must also submit to theBuilding Inspection Department. The fee's for each permit may vary.


Contractor Registration Requirement

in order to register you would need to mail in or fax in the following documents

  • A copy of your current state certified contractor’s license.
  • A copy of General Liability Insurance showing the City of Gainesville listed as the certificate holder. The address for the certificate holder should be:City of Gainesville Building Codes,P.O. Box 490 Station #9 Gainesville, Florida 32627
  • A copy of your workman’s compensation insurance or workman’s compensation exemption form issued by the State of Florida. If it is for workman’s compensation insurance, the insurance certificate should list the City of Gainesville as the certificate holder (see #2 above for the certificate holder address).
  • The best phone number and email address to attach to the business profile.
  • If anyone other than the license holder will be pulling and signing for permits, a notarized letter of authorization from the state license holder is required. (See the Signature Authorization in the Permit Forms.)
  • If you will be faxing or mailing in applications and paying by credit card, a notarized Letter of Credit Authorization will also need to be submitted for the cardholder. (See the Letter of Credit Authorization in the Permit Forms)

How to Apply for a Permit

You can apply for a permit in person, online, via mail, or by fax.

Online Permit

  • Contractors who have previously registered to use Citizen Access can apply there for permits. Permits that do not require plan review (e.g. mechanical (limited), electrical (limited), roofing, HVAC change outs, water heater replacements, plumbing re-piping, gas piping, and window and door replacements) will be issued within 24 hours.
  • Please DO NOT apply for New Commercial, New Residential, New Apartments, or Addition permits online.
  • If you are interested in submitting online for digital plan review, you will apply online through Citizen Access and note in the project description that you would like to utilize ePlan Review. Do not upload plans in Citizen Access. When the application is received, it will be reviewed for accuracy and a project created in the ePlan Review program. You will then receive an email invite to upload plans for the project.

Fax a Permit

For this, you must be a licensed contractor and registered with the City of Gainesville. Please remember to:

  • Submit a notarized Letter of Credit Authorization to the Building Inspection Department. This document shall have the printed name of the cardholder, the company name, and the signature of the cardholder. (See the sample Letter of Credit Authorization in the forms section of this website.)
  • Include a legible Mail-in/Fax Permit Application and any documentation necessary to have on file (specifications, product approvals, etc.). The application can be found in the Permit Forms.
  • Once the application is received it will be reviewed and processed during normal business hours.
  • Please provide a fax number or email address on the application to which your permit can be returned.

Mail-in Permit/In person

Gainsville does accept mail in permit applications. Remember, you have to be a licensed contractor and registered with the City of Gainesville. Please include:

  • A Permit Application. The application can be found in Permit Forms.
  • Your payment
  • We will then send you the permit (if it is over the counter) or send you a link via email to upload your plans.
  • You are also able to attend an in person to get a permit you need .
