Do I Qualify to be a Certified Electrician in California if I do not have all the required experience?

If a person wants to perform electrical work for a C-10 contractor in California and does not yet qualify to take the certification exam because of lack of work experience or related instruction, can do so legally by registering as an electrician trainee.

Work Experience and Supplemental Training

General Electrician with some on the job experience

CA Code of Regulations, Title 8, § 291.2 (g) An Electrician Trainee who has completed an Approved Curriculum for the classification for which certification is sought and is currently registered as an Electrician Trainee is eligible to take the certification examination. The Electrician Trainee must submit a certificate of completion of an Approved Curriculum with the application and pay the required application and testing fees. The Electrician Trainee shall not be certified until he or she passes the examination and submits proof of experience as required under Section 291.1. The Electrician Trainee must renew registration to continue as an Electrician Trainee until certified.

Residential Electrician with some on the job experience

If you have completed 4,800 of on-the-job-experience before you complete the 480 hours of related and supplemental training, and are still enrolled in a qualified school, you may sit for the exam. When you pass the exam you may work as an electrician for a contractor licensed as a Class C-10 contractor and you do not need to complete the 480 hours of instruction.

Fire/life/safety Technician with some on the job experience

If you have completed 4,000 of on-the-job-experience before you complete the 480 hours of related and supplemental training, and are still enrolled in a qualified school, you may sit for the exam. When you pass the exam you may work as an electrician for a contractor licensed as a Class C-10 contractor and you do not need to complete the 480 hours of instruction.

Voice/data/video Technician with some on the job experience

If you have completed 4,000 of on-the-job-experience before you complete the 480 hours of related and supplemental training, and are still enrolled in a qualified school, you may sit for the exam. When you pass the exam you may work as an electrician for a contractor licensed as a Class C-10 contractor and you do not need to complete the 480 hours of instruction.

Non-Residential Lighting Technician with some on the job experience

If you have completed 2,000 of on-the-job-experience before you complete the 180-240 hours of related and supplemental training, and are still enrolled in a qualified school, you may sit for the exam. When you pass the exam you may work as an electrician for a contractor licensed as a Class C-10 contractor and you do not need to complete the 180-240 hours of instruction.
