Broward County Contractor Licenses

Construction Licenses in Broward County

Acoustic Ceilings

Acoustic or fire-retardant acoustic material or plastic material on ceilings and supporting members. Includes the installation of metal channels, hangers, and suspended systems.

Air Conditioning Class A

Install, central air conditioning, refrigeration, heating and ventilating systems, including duct work in connection with a complete system only to the extent such duct work is performed by the contractor as is necessary to make complete an air-distribution system, boiler and unfired pressure vessel systems, and all appurtenances, apparatus, or equipment used in connection therewith; and any duct cleaning and equipment sanitizing which requires at least a partial disassembling of the system; but shall not include any work such as liquefied petroleum or natural gas fuel lines within buildings, sanitary sewer lines; swimming pool piping and filters; or electrical power wiring.

Air Conditioning Class B

Limited to twenty-five (25) tons of cooling and five hundred thousand (500,000) Btu of heating in any one (1) system in the execution of contracts, is necessary to make complete an air-distribution system being installed under this classification; and any duct cleaning and equipment sanitizing which requires at least a partial disassembling of the system, piping and insulation of pipes, vessels and ducts and to install a condensate drain from an air conditioning unit to an existing safe waste or other approved disposal other than a direct connection to a sanitary system.

Alarm System I

Fabricates, installs, maintains, alters, repairs, monitors, inspects, replaces, or service any electrical device, signaling device, or combination of electrical devices used to signal or detect a burglary, fire, robbery, or medical emergency operating at less than 98 volts. Can do all types of alarm systems for all purposes.

Alarm System II

This license includes all types of alarm systems, other than fire, for all purposes except as provided herein.

Aluminum Specialty Structure

Includes installing screened porches, screened enclosures, pool enclosures, preformed panel-post and beam roofs, mobile home panel roof-overs, residential aluminum metal/glass windows within enclosures, vinyl panel windows within enclosures, single-story self-contained aluminum utility storage structures (not to exceed five hundred (500) square feet), aluminum siding, soffit, fascia, gutters, and awnings.

Awning Erection

May install such hardware as may be necessary and incidental to the extension and retraction of awnings and canopies. Which applies to awnings that are movable or retractable or the replacement of detachable cloth/synthetic cover material on existing frames.

Bridges, Overpasses, Underpasses

Construction, repair, and excavation for bridges, overpasses, and underpasses, not crossing water. Engineered structural builder may do such excavation, paving, concrete work.

Building

Include and be limited to the construction of commercial buildings and single- and multiple-residential dwellings, and accessory use structures in connection therewith, all of which shall not exceed three (3) stories in height.

Cabinetry

Limited to the fabrication and installation of wood cabinets, countertops, bookshelves, and shelving.

Cable Television

Includes the construction, installation, repair, alteration, extension, and excavation for public and private cable television and similar communications systems, being limited to the transmission and distribution lines, and components incidental thereto, in compliance with applicable codes and regulations.

Carpentry

This license include the scope of Finish and Rough Carpentry. (Everything from trusses to baseboard).

Clearing and Grading

Include and limited to the clearing of surface debris and vegetation, including the grubbing of roots, the removal thereof, and the general leveling and grading of surface lands incidental thereto, in compliance with all environmental laws and other applicable codes and regulations.

Commercial Pool & Spa

Includes the installation, repair, or replacement of existing equipment, any cleaning or equipment sanitizing which requires at least a partial disassembling, and the installation of new pool/spa equipment, interior finishes, installation of all perimeter and filter piping, construction of equipment rooms or housing for pool equipment, and installation of package pool heaters.

Concrete Driveways, Curbs, Gutters, and Sidewalks

Involves construction, repair, grading and excavation, for concrete driveways, curbs, gutters, driveway entrances, sidewalks, and other necessary, incidental, and related nonstructural concrete appurtenances, in compliance with applicable codes and regulations.

Concrete Placing and Finishing

Placing and finishing of concrete, mixing or batching of concrete, including flatwork (slabs on grade, sidewalks, etc.), cutting and coring of concrete, and concrete pumping.

Demolition (Non-Explosives)

Limited to the demolition, wrecking, and disassembling of buildings and other structures or parts thereof, and the removal of debris.

Dredging

Dredging of canals, lakes, waterways, and other bodies of water and the removal of debris and vegetation, in compliance with all environmental laws and other applicable codes and regulations.

Drywall and Lathing

Installation of gypsum drywall products to existing studs, joists, or suspended ceiling channels; the fabrication and installation of all necessary and incidental metal accessories, including non-load bearing studs, runners, hangers, channels, drywall metal suspension accessories, and prefabricated ceiling materials, and the preparation and finish of the drywall surface.

Electrical Maintenance

A maintenance electrician shall include and be limited to maintenance repair of existing branch circuits, luminaries, apparatus, and equipment connected thereto, and shall include the switching or de-energizing of existing electrical systems for safety purposes. Shall not include the installation, alteration, or replacement of service equipment.

Elevator Installation and Maintenance

Includes and be limited to extension of elevators, dumbwaiters, escalators, or any vertical conveyance.

Fabric Awning

Installation of detachable cloth/synthetic cover awning material over an existing frame, including other materials incidental thereto, which become a permanent fixed part of buildings or other structures and which may be, in whole or in part, supported from a building wall erected and provided by others or may be self-supporting, including footings or slabs on grade in connection therewith.

Fence Erection

Includes the installation of wire, wood, metal, PVC, or plastic components, or pre-cast or prefabricated fences, and railings.

Finish Carpentry

Limited to cabinet installation, saunas, woodwork, wood floor surface materials, doors, non-structural framing, wood stairs, handrails, garage doors, and windows, and hardware incidental thereto, trim shelving, including soffits and fascias, siding, and related work.

Flatwork Concrete Specialty

Involves slabs, walks, driveways, pool decks, foundations associated with slabs, and incidental foundations.

Flooring

Application of floor surface materials made of asphalt, vinyl, sheet vinyl, cork linoleum, parquet wood, wood strips, and similar pre-finished surface flooring materials which are prefabricated or cast-in-place and may also repair, paint, and relay resilient tile floor coverings.

Fuel Transmission and Distribution Lines

Limited to the transmission and distribution lines for liquid or gaseous fuels under pressure, including pumping and booster stations, valves, meters, and similar equipment.

Garage Doors

Installation of all types of garage doors, including the related hardware and operating devices.

General Building (General)

Is unlimited as to the type of construction work and shall include the construction, repair, alteration, remodeling, addition to, subtraction from, improvement, and demolition of any building or structure, including related improvements to real estate, and excluding electrical, mechanical, plumbing, and liquefied petroleum gas. Also, is unlimited as to the height, area, and complexity of a building, structure, or related real property improvements.

General Engineering

A general engineered construction builder shall be unlimited in the engineered construction field except that the general engineered construction builder's work in connection with utilities shall be considered to stop at a point five (5) feet from a building not specifically constructed for the purpose of pumping or processing pipeline products.

Glass & Glazing

Attachment of all types of windows, whether fixed or movable; the installation of swinging or sliding glass doors to existing building walls or columns; the installation of glass-holding or supporting mullions, or horizontal bars which are attached to existing building walls or columns; and the cutting and installation of glass and mirrors.

Gunite

Application of concrete to existing surfaces by pneumatic or hydraulic methods, chipping loose concrete, the sandblasting and cleaning of reinforcements, the batching and proportioning of cement, sand, and water, erecting the forms and placement of cement and intergroup by pneumatic or hydraulic pumping methods by which, under an agreed specification, subsurface load-bearing capacities can be stabilized, or previously settled structures raised or restored to plumb, grade, or alignment.

Heavy Marine

Shall include the construction, alteration, and repair of bridges, tunnels, overpasses, harbor facilities, docks, shipyards, bulkheads, retaining walls, seawalls, dams, locks, and similar structures.

Insulation

Applying of thermal or fire-retardant materials to and within existing walls, floors, and ceilings by mechanical or adhesive methods, and to install metal channels, hangers, and suspension systems. Shall not insulate any pipes, vessels, or ducts, built-up refrigeration boxes or rooms, nor insulate the top of a roof deck where such insulation is attached over the top by adhesive.

Insulation Journeyman

Can do Insulation work under a contractor.

Interlocking Brick Pavers

Limited to preparing the base, providing for proper drainage, and to selecting, cutting and laying interlocking brick. Shall not pour or finish concrete, except that which is required for the placing of the interlocking brick system.

Irrigation

Includes all piping, fittings, sprinklers, drip irrigation products, valves, irrigation controllers, control wiring, rain sensors, water pumps, water conservation devices, water harvesting systems, irrigation main lines downstream of a utility potable water meter or utility alternative water supply distribution line and dedicated backflow prevention device, and associated components installed for the delivery and application of water. Shall not drill wells or connect any irrigation system to potable water sources.

Jack and Bore Installer

Limited to the construction, installation, repair, and excavation for public and private underground crossings, being limited to the jacking and boring of casing sections, including the welding of sections, proper pit excavations, and dewatering.

Journeyman Electrician

The applicant shall demonstrate possession to install, repair, alter, or design, in compliance with law, electrical wiring, luminaries, appliances, apparatus, raceways, conduits, fire alarm systems, or any part thereof, which generate, transmit, transform, or utilize electrical energy in any form, including the electrical installations and systems within plants and sub-stations, shall work as an employee of and under the supervision and direction of a master electrician and/or electrical contractor.

Journeyman Fire Alarm System

Fire alarm system journeyman shall work under the supervision and direction of a master electrician or specialty alarm system contractor I and shall not be eligible to act as a qualifying agent for business organizations and shall not include lightning or solar systems.

Journeyman Mechanical

Must have the knowledge to perform mechanical work in accordance with the plans and specifications therefor and in compliance with the building code and other applicable codes and regulations.

Journeyman Plumber

Journeyman Plumber shall have no less than four (4) years of practical plumbing experience. The board may, in its sole discretion, consider a person's formal or vocational education as experience in the trade.

Journeyman Sheet Metal

Shall have no less than three (3) years of practical sheet metal experience, or no less than one-half of the practical experience required for certification in the specialty sheet metal category or class for which the applicant is seeking certification as a journeyman.

Journeyman Solar Photovoltaic Systems

Installation of new, or replacement of, existing power and control wiring in photovoltaic (PV) source circuits, PV output circuits, battery storage systems circuits, and power conditioning units, excluding any other type of solar system. Is limited to PV supply side of power conditioning and shall not include wiring integral to the building premises. Will work under the supervision and direction of a master electrician or electrical contractor and shall not be eligible to act as a qualifying agent for business organizations.

Lawn Sprinkler Plumber

The installation, repair, alteration, and extension of lawn sprinkling systems and the equipment, appliances, and apparatus used in connection therewith. A lawn sprinkler plumber shall not drill wells or connect any sprinkler systems to potable water sources. Sprinkler and irrigation systems used for or in connection with agriculture are not included within the scope of work of a lawn sprinkler plumber.

Light Marine

Be limited to seawalls, retaining walls, davits, boat lifts, and small docks serving less than six (6) recreational vessels and less than fifty feet (50’) in length. May do such concrete work as may be necessary and incidental to the work.

Limited Energy (Low Voltage)

Limited to those items of transmitting data, proprietary video (satellite systems which are not part of a community antenna television, cable television, or radio distribution system), radio frequency, central vacuum, electric locks, data distribution networks, home theater systems, surround sound systems, public address systems, or telephone systems.

Major Roads

Limited to interstate, primary, secondary, and arterial roadways; repair, extension, surfacing, striping, pavement markings, and signage of roads, bridges, airport runways and aprons, parking lots, sidewalks, curbs, and gutters; and storm drainage facilities and any excavating, clearing, grading, milling, and concrete work if necessary.

Masonry

Includes selection, cutting, and laying of bricks, concrete block, and any other unit masonry or clay products, rough-cut and dress stone, artificial stone, pre-cast blocks, structural glass brick or block, decor block, and veneer, all of which may be laid at random or in course and with or without mortar; and applying tile to floors or exterior wall surfaces, masonry, or pre-cast concrete fences. Shall not pour, place, or finish cast-in-place concrete or epoxy products.

Master Electrician

The applicant shall demonstrate possession of the experience, knowledge, and skill to install, repair, alter, add to, or design electrical wiring, luminaries, appliances, apparatus, raceways, conduits, fire alarm systems, or any part thereof, which generate, transmit, transform, or utilize electrical energy in any form, including the electrical installations and systems within plants and sub-stations, all in compliance with applicable plans, specifications, codes, laws, and regulations.

Master Plumber

May install airpiping, vacuum line piping, oxygen line piping, nitrous oxide piping, and all related medical gas systems; fireline standpipes and fire sprinklers, to the extent authorized by law; ink and chemical lines; fuel oil and gasoline piping and tank and pump installation, except bulk storage plants; gaseous and liquefied hydrogen systems; and pneumatic control piping systems.

Mechanical

Install piping, insulation of pipes, vessels and ducts, pressure and process piping, pneumatic control piping, gasoline tanks and pump installations and piping for same, standpipes, air piping, vacuum line piping, oxygen lines, nitrous oxide piping, ink and chemical lines, fuel transmission lines, gaseous and liquefied hydrogen systems, liquefied petroleum gas lines within buildings, and natural gas fuel lines within buildings; to disconnect or reconnect power wiring on the load side of the disconnect switch and low-voltage heating, ventilating, and air conditioning control wiring; and to install a condensate drain from an air conditioning unit to an existing safe waste or other approved disposal other than a direct connection to a sanitary system. Shall not include any work such as potable water lines or connections thereto, sanitary sewer lines, swimming pool piping and filters, or electrical power wiring.

Mechanical Insulation

The execution of contracts requiring the experience, knowledge and skill to install, maintain, repair, alter and extend any insulation primarily installed to prevent loss or gain of heat from internal sources in pipes, vessels, ducts or in built-up refrigerated boxes or rooms, including the application of protective coating necessary and incidental thereto.

Minor Roads

Limited to the construction of privately owned or, if incidental and within publicly owned roads, bike paths, parking lots, and driveways, including the repair, extension, surfacing, striping, pavement markings, and signage of roads, parking lots, sidewalks, curbs, and gutters; and any excavating, clearing, grading, and concrete work necessary.

Miscellaneous Metals Erection

Installation of metal cabinets, store fixtures, and metal partitions which are nonbearing interior or exterior partitions made or composed of metal or other materials all of which are attached or affixed to existing openings and buildings components. May also install ornamental metal fixtures, metal nonstructural members and assemblies, including railings, panels, and metal flagpoles which may be self-supporting or attached to existing buildings or other structures, and the application of all hardware if necessary.

Painting Interior & Exterior

Limited to the application of paint and related liquid or viscous products, by brush, roller, or spray methods to interior and exterior surfaces, including roofs, painting can be accomplished either on inside or outside surfaces; and cleaning, caulking, priming, and sizing of surfaces in preparation for such work.

Painting Unlimited

Qualified to clean surfaces in preparation of waterproofing (inside or outside) (vertical surfaces only) or painting (engraving, cutting, or cleaning glass or stone or removing scale for metals) and pressure spraying to clean exterior surfaces of homes or buildings.

Pavers

Limited to preparing the base, providing for proper drainage, and to selecting, cutting, and laying pavers and shall not pour or finish concrete, except for footings required for the placing of the paver system.

Pile Driving

Qualified to the construction of piling systems, including sheet piling and the construction, formation, and excavation for foundations, the placing of reinforcing steel therein, and all concrete work necessary.

Pipeline Rehabilitation

Limited to the cleaning and video inspection of potable water, sanitary sewer, and storm sewer pipelines and components incidental thereto; chemical grouting of pipelines and associated structures; manhole-to-manhole lining of potable water, sanitary sewer, and storm sewer pipelines: in situ point repairs of pipelines; sanitary sewer and storm sewer structural rehabilitation; and other rehabilitation and repair methods and technologies requiring minor or no excavation to complete, in compliance with applicable codes and regulations.

Plans Examiners, Field Inspectors

Can perform field inspections and/or plans reviews on structures to be built inside Broward County as they relate to the HVHZ sections of the Florida Building Code and its related sections.

Plant Facilities

Limited to the construction of facilities, buildings, and structures which are designed or intended to be used as water and waste water treatment plants, pumping and lift stations, or industrial complexes; and the installation of all piping, equipment, appurtenances, and apparatus used in connection. Shall stop at a point five (5) feet outside a structure and shall not perform any electrical work.

Plastering and Stucco

Application of mixtures of sand or other aggregate, gypsum, plaster, portland cement, quick lime, and water, or any combination of such materials, so as to create a permanent surface coating which is usually applied with a plasterer's trowel or by pneumatic pressure to any surface, and to provide key or suction basis necessary and incidental to the support of such coatings. May apply and affix gypsum lath, metal lath, or any other product prepared or manufactured.

Pneumatic Control

Limited to the installation, maintenance, repair, alteration and extension of any system used for the purpose of controlling instruments, valves, damper motors, controllers and similar equipment through the use of pneumatic lines of sufficient size and strength to meet the requirements of the system.

Residential

Limited to the construction, remodeling, repair, alteration, and improvement of one (1), two (2), and three (3) residential dwelling units, and accessory use structures in connection therewith, all of which shall not exceed two (2) stories in height.

Residential Interior Remodeling

Limited to interior remodeling only of one-family, two-family, or three-family residential dwelling units, and accessory use structure in connection, all of which shall not exceed two (2) stories in height. Can perform the work of all specialty building contractor categories and classes which directly relate to interior remodeling.

Residential Pool & Spa

Installation/repair, or replacement of existing equipment, any cleaning or equipment sanitizing which requires at least a partial disassembling, and the installation of new pool/spa equipment, interior finishes, installation of all perimeter and filter piping, installation of housing for pool equipment, and installation of package pool heaters. Does not include direct connections to a sanitary sewer system or to potable water lines.

Roof Decks

Installation of roof decks, which include and are limited to gypsum concrete decks, insulating concrete decks and fills, and structural cement-fiber roof decks.

Roof Painting and Cleaning

Limited to applying paint or other decorative coatings to roof surfaces by brush, roller, or spray method, including the pressure cleaning of roofs to remove fungus, dirt, and paint, by steam or chemicals, in preparation for the application of coatings. Shall not replace any cracked or broken roof tiles nor perform any roof repairs.

Roofing

Installation, repair, and replacement of roof coverings to stop water from passing by such applied protective material, including the use of sheet metal and other sheet metal products necessary to roofing work; including the installation, repair, waterproofing, leak stoppage, extension of the life of the roof, and replacement of downspouts, shingles, roofing tiles, and other materials used in connection and including the installation of nonstructural elements.

Rough Carpentry

Limited to rough carpentry and formwork for wooden patio decks, roofs, trusses, sheathing, fascia boards (furring and blocking), placing and finishing concrete, and prefabricated sheds limited to two hundred (200) square feet. Does not include trim carpentry or finish carpentry and may not pull permits for more than two (2) floors.

Sandblasting

Includes the cleaning of surfaces by pneumatic sandblasting in preparation for waterproofing or paint, engraving, cutting, or cleaning glass or stone, and removing scale from metals.

Screen Enclosures

Installation of an enclosure, or any part thereof, which in whole or in part is self-supporting and which has walls of insect screening and a roof of insect screening, plastic, aluminum, or similar lightweight material. Does not construct cabana rooms or carports nor pour concrete slabs.

Seal Coating

Limited to the application of prepared sealants to asphalt, roadways, driveways, sidewalks, and other similar surfaces, including incidental striping, pavement markings, and signage.

Shutters (Hurricane)

Shall include all types of shutters and panels, including hardware, structural supports, and operating devices, that are designed to protect openings from hurricane and storm force winds and windborne debris and for security purposes.

Secondary Utility and Excavation

Limited to the construction, maintenance, extension, and excavation for water and waste water piping systems, storm and drainage systems, soakage pits and drywells and appurtenances incidental (manholes, conflict structures, catch basins, etc.), but shall stop at a point five (5) feet from a building or other structure.

Sheet Metal

Unlimited in Sheet Metal trade, when not prohibited by law, of ferrous or nonferrous metal work of U.S. No. 10 gauge, or lighter gauge, but not limited to fiberglass, used in lieu thereof and of air-handling systems, including the setting of air-handling equipment and reinforcement of same and including the balancing of air-handling systems and any duct cleaning and equipment sanitizing which requires at least a partial disassembling of the system.

Sign Erection (Non-electric)

Installation of any outside display of characters, letters, illustrations, or ornamentations which do not include the incorporation of any electrical work in their manufacture, fabrication, or erection. May also install panels, facing, and frame structures which are movable or fixed, free standing, or attached to an existing building or structure.

Steel Reinforcing and Iron

Qualified to the fabrication, placing, and tying of steel reinforcing bars (rods) of any profile, perimeter, or crosssection which are used or intended or designed to be used to reinforce concrete buildings or structures, in accordance with the plans and specifications therefor.

Structural Steel

Limited to the erection of structural steel shapes and plates, including such minor field fabrication as may be necessary, of any profile, perimeter, or cross-section used, or which may be used, as structural members for buildings and structures, including steel joists; steel decking in conjunction with lightweight decks; siding; communication towers; and all riveting, welding, and rigging necessary.

Surfacing

Shall include the construction, repair, extension, surfacing, striping, pavement markings, and signage of tennis courts, bike paths, driveways, and parking lots with drainage incident thereto, being limited to soakage pits and drywells, and any excavating, clearing, and grading work necessary.

Swimming Pool & Spa Servicing

Replacement or repair of existing equipment, any cleaning or equipment sanitizing, and the installation of new pool/spa equipment, interior refinishing, the reinstallation or addition of pool heaters, the repair or replacement of all perimeter piping and filter piping, the repair of equipment rooms or housing for pool/spa equipment, and the substantial or complete draining of a swimming pool, hot tub, or spa, for the purpose of any repair or renovation. Does not include direct connections to a sanitary sewer system or potable water lines.

Terrazzo

Will be limited to the mixing, pouring, preparation, and finishing of terrazzo, including the application of Chattahoochee stone or any stone aggregates applied or affixed through the use of adhesives.

Tile, Marble, and Granite

Shall include erecting, attaching, applying, and embedding tile, marble, and granite on concrete, clay or other materials, applied to floors or walls, and shall include the application of setting materials. Includes tile, brick, marble, granite, or similar materials and is to include non-load-bearing structural elements.

Transport Assembly

Services are limited to the execution of contracts requiring the experience, knowledge and skill to install any system of horizontal conveyor assembly, including any vertical conveyors attached to horizontal conveyor assemblies, and all appurtenances and equipment necessary and incidental thereto. Contractor shall not include any external plumbing or electrical systems.

Tunnels

Shall include and be limited to the construction, repair, and excavation for tunnels and all paving and concrete work incidental.

Underground, Aerial Utility Transmission and Distribution Lines

Limited to the construction, installation, and excavation for underground and aerial electrical and communication transmission lines, manholes, splice pits, and laying of rigid conduit incidental.

Underground Utility and Excavation

Construction, installation, repair, maintenance, alteration, extension, and excavation for water and waste water piping systems, storm and drainage systems, and the installation of force mains, pumping stations, and pipeline appurtenances, including catch basins, manholes, valves, and similar equipment incidental.

Waterproofing

Application of waterproofing products by brush, roller, or spray methods to existing interior and exterior surfaces, except roofs, in accordance with the plans and specifications therefor, including the cleaning, sandblasting, caulking, and priming of surfaces in preparation for the application of waterproofing products.

Window and Door

To install, replace, repair, and servicing work, when not prohibited by law, in accordance with accepted engineering data and/or according to manufacturers' specifications of exterior windows and doors, hurricane protection devices, shutters, and hardware in connection therewith which do not effect structural changes.


Broward County Contractor Application

You can complete a trade-specific application by:

Submit the application, fee(s) and required documents (as noted on the application) to Broward County 10 days prior to your trade's Board meeting. You must submit your applciation package in the following order:

  1. Fully Completed Application
  2. Affidavits
  3. Credit References
  4. Credit Report
  5. Corporate Documents

The Board will review your application and their results will be mailed to you. If your application is approved, you will be contacted by Gainesville Independent Testing Services (GITS).

After you have taken your exam, GITS will provide us your exam results. You will be notified by mail of any additional requirements necessary to receive your license. If you do not pass the exam, you may contact GITS and schedule another test.

We recommend you pick up your license in person at our office.

Important
Contractor certification includes an exam for the trade plus a business and law exam. Journeyman certification does not require a business & law exam. A passing grade of at least 70% is required except for the Plumbing, Electrical, Mechanical and Engineering exam, which is 75%.

Appearing Before the Board

The Board highly recommends that if you have any concerns about your application – such as a low credit score, inability to supply references, lack of relevant work experience, etc. – you should request to appear before the Board when submitting your application. This will help reduce delays and expedite your application.

Affidavits

Please advise anyone preparing an affidavit that they may be contacted by Broward County to verify information provided. Affidavits must be submitted to substantiate the aforementioned required experience. Affidavits must be completed by your present or former licensed contractor employer.

Types of affidavits accepted:

  • One notarized affidavit from a State of Florida or Broward County licensed contractor of equal or higher category of license than the one for which you are applying for; or
  • One notarized letter from a licensed architect or engineer verifying required experience for the specific type of work performed; or
  • Three notarized affidavits from out-of-state licensed contractors, with license numbers included, verifying the required experience for the specific type of work performed.

References

Please provide at least three credit references as follows:

  • At least one from a local financial institution stating your accounts are in good standing.
  • Two letters from supply houses or other similar business entities you have done business with.

All letters of reference should be notarized, include a contact number and, if applicable, a certificate of competency number. Providing more than the minimum number of required letters of reference will only enhance your application. The Board may or may not consider, at its discretion, letters of reference from homeowners you have performed work for.

Personal Credit Report

The Board highly recommends that you pull your credit report just prior to submitting your application. This will ensure the Board is presented with the most current information pertaining to your credit history. However, reports dated within 12 months or less may be used. If your report is over 90 days old, it must be accompanied by a notarized affidavit stating no material change has occurred since its preparation and that is substantially represents your current financial condition. Your personal credit report must include your credit score. If the credit score is less than 550, you will have to appear before the Board to explain any area(s) of concern.

Business Credit Report

If you already have an active corporation, you should also provide a credit report for your business – also including the credit score.

Personal Financial Statement

If you have a personal financial statement, please include it with your application. If you do not, please include copies of your most recent bank statements.

Corporate Financial Statement

If you already have an active corporation, please provide a comprehensive financial statement – notarized by your accountant. The financial statement should not be over 180 days old. If over 90 days old, it needs to be accompanied by a notarized affidavit stating that no material change has occurred since its preparation and that is substantially represents your current financial condition and the business organization.

Fictitious Corporate Name

If the firm is not incorporated but is operating under a trade name – other than your proper name – the company must conform to Florida Statute §865.09 and must be properly registered with the Florida Division of Corporations.

Business Organization

If you are qualifying a corporation, you are required to provide:

  • A copy of the front page of your Article of Incorporation
  • A copy of the page listing the corporate officers
  • A written statement from the Secretary of State certifying the corporation is current

Certificates of Insurance

After you have passed your exam, you will be required to submit certificates of insurance. Reciprocity applicants will be required to submit insurance at the time of application. The minimum liability insurance amounts are:

  • Bodily Injury $300,000
  • Property Damage* $50,000

*for any one accident, including damage to rights-of-way and/or shrubbery

Worker’s Compensation Insurance

In addition to the certificates of insurance listed above, you will need to submit proof of worker’s compensation insurance or a waiver stating exemption from Florida’s Workers Compensation law.

You must include two passport-sized photos of yourself taken within the last three months.

Notification

After the Board reviews your application, you will be advised of their decision by letter – or if you choose to appear before the board, at the meeting.

Testing

Once approved, your contact information will be sent to Gainesville Independent Testing Service, LLC (GITS©). They will contact you to schedule your exams. Applicants are required to pass a Trade and Business Exam with a minimum passing score of 70%
Answer all questions in full, please type or print clearly with sufficient detail to determine if you are qualified to take the examination. If not applicable indicate N/A. Attach additional sheets if necessary.
